On Tuesday, January 7, 2025, a powerful earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale shook Kathmandu at 6:50 a.m., as reported by the National Earthquake Measurement Centre. The tremors extended to parts of Bihar, including Madhubani. The earthquake’s epicenter was Dinggye, China, located along the collision zone of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. This region is known for its seismic activity, often causing shifts in the Himalayan mountain range.

Impact on Nepal and China

In Kathmandu and neighboring districts like Kavrepalanchwok and Dhading, residents fled their homes in panic. Areas near Mount Everest, including Lobuche, also experienced tremors and aftershocks. However, no significant damage has been reported in Nepal so far.

Meanwhile, Western China faced a more severe impact. A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Shigatse at 9:05 a.m., resulting in nine fatalities and damaging buildings in towns like Lhatse. Videos showed crumbled shop fronts and debris covering roads. The depth of this quake was recorded at 10 km (6.2 miles), according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre.

Historical Context and Regional Vulnerability

Nepal’s location at the intersection of tectonic plates makes it prone to earthquakes. The devastating 2015 earthquake in the region caused nearly 9,000 deaths and destroyed over half a million homes. This history highlights the importance of preparedness and early warning systems in the region.

Key Facts:

  • Magnitude: 7.1 (Kathmandu), 6.8 (Western China)
  • Time: 6:50 a.m. (Nepal), 9:05 a.m. (China)
  • Epicenters: Dinggye, China (7.1 quake); Near Shigatse, China (6.8 quake)
  • Impact: 9 deaths in Western China; tremors felt in Nepal and India (Bihar, Assam, West Bengal)

Stay tuned for updates as officials continue to assess the situation in affected areas.
